Post UFC 235: Why Tyron Woodley Won’t Get Another Title Shot

Following the loss of his welterweight title, Tyron Woodley is calling for a rematch against new champ, Kamaru Usman. Woodley said in his UFC 235 post fight interview “I’m just looking to rematch and run it back, man,” citing his extended reign as champion as evidence to back up his statement. Unfortunately, for a lot […]

UFC 235 Results: Kamaru Usman Makes Tyron Woodley Look Like a Chump, Takes Belt

He won TUF 21, but you can’t hold that against him now. No, not after Kamaru Usman beat the ever-loving crap out of champ Tyron Woodley for five full rounds.

Woodley has been a pretty okay champ. He’s got no charisma, so the division has suffered a bit because of it, but whatever. Woodley is a tough, talented dude.

And Usman made him look like a chump.

There’s a lot I could say about what went down, but the clips in these tweets paint the full picture best:

Maybe Woodley had an “off” night, maybe Usman is just that good. Regardless, now we’re going to get to see Usman destroy Colby Covington, and that’s good.

New UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman has revealed he fought and beat Tyron Woodley on a fractured foot.

Usman, who is the first African born UFC champion, destroyed Woodley over five rounds and claimed a unanimous and wide points decision from the judges.

The victory will go down as one of the most dominant title wins for a challenger against an excellent reigning champion, but Usman made a stunning injury admission after the fight.

Usman had his left foot in a boot for fight week after suffering a fracture and needed a cortisone shot before entering the octagon on Saturday night in Las Vegas.

‘It definitely took a toll on my body,’ Usman said after the fight.

‘I had to go struggle and go through so much adversity just to get here.’

Usman’s first defence is already lined up against Colby Covington, who was cageside taunting his rival wearing his interim belt, a title he was stripped of last year.

Covington was there to stake his claim as the ‘real champion’ after the UFC overlooked him for the UFC 235 title showdown.

Usman was stopped from confronting Covington cageside, declaring he wanted to rip him to pieces.

‘I’ve been told that before, so I’m not going to believe anything until I’m locked in that cage,’ Covington said about his shot against Usman.

‘Obviously there was promises made before and it wasn’t promises kept. I’m a man of my word, so I hope they’re a man of their word and keep their word this time.’

In the main event, Jon Jones cruised by Anthony Smith to retain his light heavyweight title, while octagon newcomer Ben Askren claimed a controversial submission win over Robbie Lawler.

Herb Dean stepped in to call the fight in the first round when he thought Lawler was out cold from a choke, but the former champion quickly protested the decision, insisting he was never unconscious and it was an early stoppage.

Dana White echoed Lawler’s grievances after the contest, revealing he planned to re-book Askren-Lawler, even though the winner said he had no interest in fighting Lawler again.

Colby Covington Screwed Out of Title Fight Because He Is an Idiot

For a hot minute there, Colby Covington was almost the man. He beat Dong Hyun Kim, beat Demian Maia, and then beat former lightweight champ Rafael dos Anjos (albeit at welterweight). Added to that formula was his incessant trash talk, and it seemed like Covington was a lock for a heated bout against reigning welterweight king Tyron Woodley.

Well, you know that old adage about striking while the iron is hot? Apparently Covington’s unwillingness to fight on the UFC’s timetable has cost him that would-be money fight.

I want to feel bad for Covington, maybe make the argument that he got screwed… but he’s an idiot who screwed himself. Sure, fighters are supposed to make the most of their time in the spotlight, because that time won’t last forever, but Covington’s wins were never all that exciting to begin with.

I guess he over-valued his worth. Because hated trash-talkers who are only minimally exciting are a dime a dozen, don’t you know?
